* Download Suggestions *

Like many programs you can download for free from the Internet, some of these PDF creating programs may provide options for you to install other software along with the PDF tool itself. Since you probably want to download ONLY the PDF tool, watch carefully during download and installation to uncheck boxes for offers you do not want, or choose buttons that say, "Decline Offer" rather than "Accept Offer", or other similar terms.

Windows

The full version of Ancestral Quest (versions 11, 12, 12.1 and 14) included the ability to print charts and reports to PDF files, which worked properly for 32-bit versions of Windows, but not for 64-bit versions. If you have either a 64-bit version of Windows or the Basics version of Ancestral Quest, or Ancestral Quest 16/15, you will still be able to print charts and reports to PDF files, but you will need to install a separate, third-party PDF creation utility, and then select it as your printer when you want to create a PDF file.

Windows 10 comes with its own PDF printer driver, named "Microsoft Print to PDF", which you can use for printing reports for standard sizes of paper. Otherwise, for Windows users, there is a list, below, of some of the free PDF creation utilities of which we are aware. If you prefer a different PDF creation tool, such as Adobe Acrobat, you will want to use that, instead. (Note that Incline Software does not recommend any of these products, but we have heard from users who are happy with them.)

Mac

While Macintosh computers come with PDF creation abilities as part of the operating system, Ancestral Quest for Mac does require the installation and use of a third-party PDF generating tool. We have the link and instructions for PDFwriter for Mac, below. If you prefer a different third-party PDF creation tool, please feel free to use it. (Note that Incline Software does not recommend any of these products, but we have heard from users who are happy with them.)

Procedure

When you go to print your report to a different PDF generator, here are the procedures to use...

...when using the Print Reports and Charts screen:

  1. In AQ, go to the menu bar and select File then Print Reports and Charts.
  2. Within the Print Reports and Charts screen, select the desired report and its settings, as usual.
  3. Then, in the lower-right corner of the window, within the Destination section, instead of choosing PDF File, leave Printer/Screen selected.
  4. Now, go up and click on the Printer Setup button. Within the dialog box that appears, for Printer Name, click the down arrow, and select the PDF generator that you have installed. You can select the other printer setup options, as desired. Click OK.
  5. Next, you can click the Preview button, as usual, to see how the report will appear... then just click Print, and the PDF generator will engage and prompt you to save the PDF file.

...when using the Publish a Family Book screen:

  1. In AQ, go to the menu bar and select File then Publish Family Book.
  2. Within the Publish a Family Book screen, open the desired book and its contents/settings, as usual.
  3. Then, in the middle of the window, within the Destination section, instead of choosing PDF File, leave Printer/Preview selected.
  4. Now, go over and click on the Printer Setup button.

Note: As long as the PDF creator is selected as your printer, any reports or charts that you print will actually be created as a PDF file. When you want to print charts and reports again on your printer, simply go to the Printer Setup screen and select the desired printer.
