Mission Possible: Finding Temple Names (Part 2)

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to learn some tricks in AQ to help in working with names to take to the temple.

Because Ancestral Quest is not a Web app, make sure you have the latest version of the free Ancestral Quest Basics installed on your computer. Review the first steps of Finding Temple Names (Part 1) to make sure your copy of AQ is up-to-date, and set to work with LDS data.

This lesson assumes you will be working with the file you created in Part 1, or a similar file.

  • Tip 1: Adjust your database so you can see how each person is related to you.
    1. Click the Home button on the toolbar to select your record.
    2. Go to the Tools menu and select Relationship Indicators.
    3. Make sure your name is shown as the root person, check the box for Show Relationships in Family View, and click OK. Once this process completes, you will see how people in the file is related to you.
  • Tip 2: Adjust IDs to make it easy to correlate the records in your file with the corresponding records in FamilySearch Family Tree.
    1. Go to AQ's Tools menu and select Preferences
    2. Under Append to Names, select RIN [FamilySearch ID].
    3. Click OK. You will now see both the RIN of the records in your personal file along with the FS PID of the record in FS. On the Missing Ordinance Report, you will also see both IDs for each name.
  • Tip 3: See more details of how you relate to each person in your file.
    1. Preview the LDS Incomplete Individual Ordinances report and locate an ancestor who is missing ordinances. Write down that person's RIN.
    2. Close the report and the Reports and Charts screen.
    3. Use Ctrl+f to open the Find Individual screen.
    4. Type in the RIN of your selected person.
    5. Click OK.
    6. On the toolbar, click on the Search for Individual button, immediately to the right of the binoculars button. Notice in the upper right corner of this screen you will see a button that shows the relationship between you and this person.
    7. Scroll up and down through the list of names. Notice that for each person in the list, this button will show your relationship to the person.
    8. Click on the relationship button to view the line of descent between you and the person. You can click on the Print to File button to see the line of descent in a more expanded view.
  • Tip 4: Keep your file in sync with the temple system over time.
    1. Over time, as you or others complete ordinances for the ancestors in your file, the information you initially download in Part 1 will slowly become out of date. From time to time--perhaps weekly or monthly--you will want to have AQ scan for completed ordinances and update your file.
      • Go to AQ's FamilySearch menu and select the Ordinance Reservation and Tracking System.
      • Click on Update Ordinances.
      • Select All, or if you are concentrating on one branch of your family, use the Select button to select that branch. Make sure you check the box for Create list of updates, so you can get a list of all ordinances that have been completed in the temples. Use Help to understand the other options on this screen.
      • Click the Update Ordinances button. AQ will begin scanning the records in your file that have missing ordinances, and compare with the temple records. If the temple system has new information, you will be alerted, and allowed to update your file a record at a time, or select an option to have AQ scan and update all records without your intervention.
When this process is done, your file will again be in sync with the temple system for your selected records, and you'll have a report of all temple work that was completed since your initial download, or since you last ran this procedure.

Note

If you are using the free AQ Basics, you will need to use an alternate method of finding out whether ordinances have been updated. When you are ready to review any name on your list, simply locate the person in the Family or Pedigree view, then click on the blue Tree icon. If ordinances are completed, you will be able to update your record.
