Mission Possible: Finding Temple Names (Part 1)

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to quickly find family names to take to the temple.

  1. Because Ancestral Quest is not a Web app, make sure you have the latest version of the free Ancestral Quest Basics installed on your computer.
    • If Ancestral Quest is not already installed, go to www.ancquest.com/AQBasics.htm to download and install the free Ancestral Quest Basics.
    • If Ancestral Quest is already installed, open AQ, go to AQ's "Internet" menu, and select the option to "Check for Latest AQ Release". If this indicates that your copy is not the latest, follow the instructions to update your copy of AQ.
  2. Make sure your copy of AQ is ready to work with FamilySearch (FS) and LDS ordinances.
    1. Go to AQ's Tools menu and select Preferences
    2. Make sure that both Use LDS Data and Connect with FamilySearch are checked.
    3. Click OK.
  3. Create a new database (Because you are not sure of how accurate FamilySearch's information is, do NOT import into an existing database.)
    1. Go to AQ's File menu and select New.
    2. Create a file with a name such as Temple Names.
  4. Import 6 generations of your ancestors from FamilySearch.
    1. Go to AQ's FamilySearch menu, then select Import Family Lines. If requested, sign into FamilySearch with your FamilySearch User ID and Password.
    2. Adjust the options to:
      • Download your ancestors
      • Import 6 generations
      • Do NOT include families in this step
      • Import LDS Ordinances
    3. Click the Import button and wait a few minutes as AQ downloads your ancestors from FamilySearch.
  5. Select an End of line Ancestor for whom you want to import their descendants (your cousins).
    1. Go to AQ's Pedigree view
    2. Follow any line to the last (7th) generation and click on the name of an ancestor
  6. Import the descendants of this selected ancestor.
    1. Go back to AQ's FamilySearch menu, and again select Import Family Lines. Choose the option to Add Descendants to your selected person.
    2. Adjust the options to import 4 generations
    3. Click the Import button. Since this is a temporary database, decline the option to make a backup. Wait a few minutes as AQ downloads your cousins and their temple ordinances
  7. Print the lists of your cousins who are missing temple ordinances.
    1. Go to AQ's File menu, then select Print Reports and Charts.
    2. Select the Lists tab of report types
    3. Select the LDS Incomplete Individual Ordinances report
    4. Use the Options button to make sure you are NOT including End-of-line Individuals (The import process above will not import Sealing to Parents ordinance information for individual whose parents are not in the AQ database.) Also, change the birth years to 0 to 1915, so you are only looking at individuals who were born at least 110 years ago.
    5. Preview the list. If you want, Print the list.
  8. You can now work from this list to verify information and reserve ordinances.

Continue This Work

Having only downloaded 6 generations of Ancestors and 4 generations of one ancestor's descendants, your list of temple names from this task may be small.

Continue to follow the above steps, but select perhaps 8-12 generations of ancestors, and 2 fewer generations of descendants of one or more ancestor.

Your list of names should grow exponentially. One such list included over 7,000 names that could be reserved.

If you work on this list for weeks or months, occasionally use AQ's Update Ordinances feature to keep this list in sync with ongoing temple work, or review an individual prior to reserving, to see if more updated data is available.
