This list is Incline Software's compilation of Family History Centers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Church), but is not an official list published by The Church. We tried to make the list as up to date and accurate as possible. There are additional centers. This is a transient list -- The Church from time to time takes a center out of operation, places new centers in operation, and for other reasons phone numbers tend to change. For official, current information, and locations of smaller centers, you should call the Church at 1-800-346-6044, or 1-801-240-2584.
You may also locate a Family History Center near you using the official FamilySearch web site at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp.
The Church has the most complete library of genealogical resources in the world, kept on microfilm, in books, and on computer. You will have access to this information at these sites. Not all centers have all the information -- you can expect to have a volunteer help you request copies of items not physically located at your center from the main library in Salt Lake City, Utah. There may be a small fee associated with obtaining such copies.
Family History Centers typically have Personal Ancestral File(R) (PAF), a genealogy program produced by The Church, installed on one or more of their computers. The Windows versions of PAF were developed, with permission from Incline Software, from an earlier version of Ancestral Quest(tm) (AQ). You will notice that the PAF that runs on these computers is very similar to AQ. Incline Software has given permission and encouragement to these Centers to install Ancestral Quest free of charge on their computers, so that you can use your data on their computers while working in the centers. If your center does not have AQ installed, please have them contact Incline Software (ancquest@ancquest.com) for instructions on installing AQ in the center. If your center has AQ installed, you should be able to take a backup copy of your database to the center and restore it there for your use while at the center. The volunteers should know how to use PAF. Since AQ is so similar, they should have little trouble helping you if necessary with your AQ. (If the volunteer has trouble with AQ -- presumably because he/she doesn't realize it is so similar to PAF, he/she can show you how to perform an operation in PAF, and you will find that you can usually perform the same operation in AQ.) When you are done, you can take the updated data back home, and use it with Ancestral Quest.
Centers also have such programs as FamilySearch(R), the Ancestral File(tm), and the International Genealogical Index(R). These resources will make millions of names available to you through computers, many of which have already been researched by others and linked into families, ready for you to download for import directly into Ancestral Quest.
These centers are privately owned, however The Church has indicated that everyone is welcome to use them. The centers are operated by volunteers, and hours vary depending on the schedules put together by the volunteers. You should try contacting someone at the center via phone before visiting to make sure of their hours, and you might try calling at different times of day and evening, and on different days of the week. If you have trouble reaching someone, call The Church at the number listed above.
